Magdalena Schamberger (GB, A)

Artistic Director, Director, Performer and Teacher

Magdalena is originally from Austria but considers herself an honorary Scot. She has lived in Edinburgh, Scotland, since 1995.

Magdalena is Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Hearts & Minds. She was responsible for creating the first Scottish Clowndoctors programme for children in 1999 and in 2001 developed the unique Elderflowers programme for elderly people with dementia. The Elderflowers programme uses the concept of an extended "clown family" with a "real" made up history. Clown characters are relevant to the participants' era and their costumes reflect and take inspiration from the participant's time.

Magdalena has trained with Philippe Gaulier, Monica Pagneux and Pierre Byland. She has over 20 years of experience performing, directing and teaching physical theatre and clowning in the UK and internationally and has worked with companies across Europe, West Africa and the USA. Her most relevant directing credits include the clown shows "A clean sweep" (2005) and "By the seat of your pants" (2011) for Plutôt la vie, Edinburgh.

Her teaching includes workshops for the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD) Glasgow, Dundee Rep Theatre, the Education Department of the national Theatre London and the Canadian Association for the Therapeutic Clowns (CATC) in Montreal.

Workshop: "Clowning with seniors" - a clown journey between innocence and experience

23.03. - 25.03.2012

Clowns who are interested in geriatric

This workshop is for professional performers interested in exploring or deepening their experience in working with elderly people.

"Clowning with Seniors" will focus on the balance/imbalance between the naiveté of the clown performer, and the realities and experiences of participants who are advanced in age. We will work on looking at your personal clown in a different light and explore creating characters, partnerships and routines suited to this particular age range. Amongst other things we will be using "Clowning and Melodrama" exercises to the re-focus and access a different 'clown age range'.

Requirements - please bring along slightly formal clothing from a different era; in addition for the "Clowning and Melodrama" exercises please bring along(ish) skirts for women (between knee and ankle), shawls and scarves; suits and hats for men.
